2011 marked the first year for the Western Illinois Amateur Golf Championship. It was the idea of Mel Blasi, the head golf pro at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course. While there has been the Western Illinois Golf Association (W.I.G.A) for many years, there has never been a real tournament to see who is the best golfer in Western Illinois. The hopes for this tournament is that it will bring players from all around and have a real fun but competitive tournament.
Mel, Pro Shop Manager Heather Higgins, and Graduate Assistant Jon Stockton decided to make a tournament that would determine each year which golfer was the best for their division. They came up with the idea to have a two day tournament at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course each year. This tournament would allow the best golfers from all over come and compete against each other in a scratch tournament.
Hope for the Future
The goal is to make this tournament not only an annual tournament and to eventually expand it to be at other courses across the Midwest. We would like to see it grow into maybe a year long event with points from each tournament for an end of the year overall winner.
